Graciela Iturbide
Graciela Iturbide, born in Mexico City in 1942, is one of Latin America's most important photographers. She studied film at the Centro de Estudios Cinematográficos of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, where she met Manuel Álvarez Bravo and became his assistant; his methods and aesthetics have shaped her work ever since.
Working in black and white, she photographs the people of her native Mexico, most often women, whom she sees as embodying independence and strength. Her book Juchitán de las Mujeres, devoted to the Zapotec women of Juchitán, inspired her lifelong support of feminist causes. She has also photographed in the Sonoran Desert, Cuba, Panama, India, Argentina and the United States.
Iturbide was honoured with the 2010 Lucie Award for Achievement in Fine Art and received the Hasselblad Award in 2008. Her work was shown at House of Lucie Los Angeles in 2026 in collaboration with Rose Gallery.
